Sorry Aerosmith....
I vote for Green Day.
If you have ever liked GD even a little bit, check out the "Bullet In a Bible" concert DVD and CD set. Amazingly tight band!

When I got to thinking about it, I realized how many of my favorite bands, both past and present, are from England.
I can't think of anyone I like better, at this point in time, than Green Day. So that makes two votes. "Can I get another amen? AMEN! There's a flag wrapped around a score of men..."
In no particular order, my other considerations:
Foo Fighters Weezer R.E.M.
And if defunct bands are included:
Nirvana Smashing Pumpkins Boston Blondie Cars Sugar Guadalcanal Diary Blake Babies Magnapop
Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.

What about... nope... how about... nope...
Dang, this is hard. They are all either British, German or Canadian aren't they. Even Deep Purple.
No wonder everyone thinks Guns & Roses is "the great American band".
I briefly thought "what about Klaatu ?" but I think they eventually turned out to be a bunch of Canadian studio musicians gigging in LA.

I'm not a personal fan of the music, but still repect bands like Metallica, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and even The Beach Boys.

Van Halen, Journey, Allman Brothers, KISS, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews are a couple more. Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young should also be in the running ... and we haven't even touched any of the blues bands from way back when who's music is the base foundation of a lot of rock songs from bands all over the world.
