Yes I think you have accurately summarize the situation. I have owned my Pioneer Dv-45A for about 3-4 years, and was oblivious to this problem. I've been happy with the performance, but am always looking to improve it if the price tag isn't too high. I do listten to a lot SACD's, not so many DVD-A's, and I don't listen to classical at all, but for $250 bucks I'll probably have to get an ICBM. I just told the wife a week ago that I was done buying stereo equpment (for a long while), and I believed it when I said it. Looks like I lied, oh well.
I usually take the "better to ask for forgivness, than approval" approach, time to use it again.

I think I have said the exact same thing about 3 times so far this year to my wife. I think I didn't say it two weeks ago when my new subwoofer showed up, so I am in the clear.

Sim, I'm thinking if you do listen to quite a number of SACD's the ICBM will improve your bass management and from what I've been reading and understanding it will do this to the point of you being extremely happy with the unit. I believe some folks think that the unit will provide a much better bass management system to their overall system or actually 'replace' the system...that's not the case with some receivers/processors. IMO
As far as this A/V stuff and the wife, it's a lost cause...I just get it, take the beating for a day or so and go on about my blissful way. Whenever we are either watching a movie or listening to *her* music and the compliments start, I just roll *my* eyes!

I can't help but think "Intercontinental Ballistic Missile" everytime I see ICBM. It must be the aerospace in me.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get me an ICBM.
You and I have the same approach to dealing with the wives, just do it and deal with the wrath for a while. It usually leads to a large purchase by her to get even. This stereo stuff sure gets expensive due to the wife penalty.
