Your still getting the full 500 watts from the amp either way, but yes, you could bump down the sub volume a little, and most likely the receiver will move closer to 0dB's. I think my Denon 2805 has my 500 at around -3dB and the sub knob is somewhere around 7 o'clock.
Do you have the speaker setup menu setting all speakers to Small, and a crossover of 80hz, then run the setup?

Speakers are set to small and crossover at 80hz, it sounds great, I'm just worried if I crank the sub volume up will there be a problem? If not I'll just leave it like it is.

There should be no problem. If you want more bass turn it up. If you want less turn it down. I have mine set around 8 o'clock.

I agree, there is no one perfect answer. Some people like more BOOOOOM than others. I think the Axiom pamphlet stated to put the sub knob initially at about the half-way point of 9'oclock for the first setup. Once you have the receiver setup, you can adjust the knob on the sub a little until you've reached your desired sound..

Randy, the pamphlet says "VOLUME: Set this midway to the 9 o'clock position for initial setup." That statement is a little confusing because when stating a "midway" point, usually two points on the scale are mentioned, like midway between point "x" and point "y." Since only one point is mentioned, the "9 o'clock" position, I assume, the unmentioned point is the position of lowest possible volume which is about the 4 o'clock position. "Midway to the 9 o'clock position" from that point would be the mid point between 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock.

Jack, my interpretation is that the problem is a missing comma after "midway". The max is about 2 o'clock and the min is about 4 o'clock, so 9 would indeed be "midway". If they wanted to suggest 6 or 7 they probably would just have said that. For want of a comma this has now involved two threads in discussion of the matter.

Actually that is what I meant to say, I just didn't feel like walking downstairs to get the pamphlet...

I considered the possibility that a comma (or two) had been omitted, but gave Axiom the benefit of the doubt, and assumed they said what they meant (or should that be "meant what they said"? ).
Actually, if they meant the clause "to the 9 o'clock position" to be a clarification of the term "midway," they should've used TWO commas. So, it would look like this: " VOLUME: Set this midway, to the 9 o'clock position, for initial setup." And, adding an "i.e.," also set off by commas, REALLY would have made it clear: " VOLUME: Set this midway, i.e., to the 9 o'clock position, for initial setup."
Further explanation (for extra credit ): " i.e." is the abbreviation of the Latin phrase " id est" which, literally translated, means " it is." However, the abbreviation is generally interpreted to mean " that is (to say)." So, inserting those words into our "VOLUME" sentence, the meaning becomes crystal clear. " VOLUME: Set this midway, that is to say, to the 9 o'clock position, for initial setup."
I don't know who would be prouder, my brother, who was my 9th grade English teacher, or Mrs. Nesbitt, who was my 9th grade Latin teacher. I must've paid attention when I was in 9th grade, something I ceased doing by the time I reached 12th grade.
