But doesn't longevity need to factor in? I mean, Hendrix was a God to me, but he was only here for a few years. Ditto the Doors and many others mentioned here. John, if you wanna go that route, I'll throw in the Boston Pops! I think Aerosmith would be the likely first choice of many, but after watching that Green Day DVD I have to admit that Aerosmith is just downright sloppy in comparison.... though that's part of the "Rock and Roll" mystique to some!

KMFDM (ok they were founded in Germany but they are a US band now!) I can't think of any band of my time that can touch Reznor and his Nine Inch Nails. His stuff is like Mozart, Beethoven to me in it's genious.

Cleveland Orchestra.
Thank you, John! My favorite was the Glenn Miller Orchestra, followed closely by the Benny Goodman Orchestra.
OK , slightly more modern, the already mentioned Beach Boys, Eagles and CSNY. I can think of a number of other bands that I really enjoyed, but I wouldn't consider them contenders for the "Best American Band."

I believe Dave Matthews is South African. Could be wrong, though...
Here's my vote for Metallica & Megadeth. Of course, just about everything that everyone else mentioned is great too.

My all-times...
- Sugar (& Bob Mould's solo career) - Faith No More - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blondie - Ramones - Talking Heads - Descendents - Misfits - Social Distortion/Mike Ness - NOFX - Bad Religion - Alice Cooper - Ministry - and the Man in Black (Johnny Cash)
just off the top of my head...

Not trying to nitpick, but I believe Neil Young is Canadian.

I'm not trying to nitpick, either, but Graham Nash is British, so that leaves CS.
