Hello All,

kind of a return newbie here. Thought I'd see if anyone could assist me... Tried to call Denon. Yikes. Anyway, I just bought a Samsung LN-S4095D and Denon 2307ci (don't get me going on that remote). Right now I'm running a Pioneer DV-45a dvd player, and PS2. They are both connected to the receiver with component cables. I have an HDMI cable connected to the receiver going out to the tv as the 'monitor'. I've assigned the appropriate component outputs, turned on the analog-to-digital conversion and made sure the HDMI input is active through my tv. The problem is that I'm still not getting any upconversion. I can only get video if I sent the signal to the tv with another component cable. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be great...

There is a difference between upconverting and upscaling...I have heard in the past that if a component signal is being inputed (on some recievers), it cannot be upconverted, just pass though. Just throwing ideas out there, I actually have no clue...

Try hooking up your PS2 with the composite cables, see if that works.

on the denon 2807, the monitor (TV) had to support HDCP on the HDMI in order to use the HDMI.

YMMV

Upconversion is routing signal from lower quality connections to one of higher quality. So, Component -> HDMI, S-video -> Component, Composite -> HDMI, etc. are examples of upconversion.

Upscaling is changing the format of a signal from lower resolution to higher. So, 480i -> 480p, 480i -> 1080i, 720p -> 1080i, etc. are examples of upscaling.

Your receiver will only upconvert, not upscale.

I suspect your TV does not accept 480i signals on the HDMI input. Look into the manual for specs. To test this easily, set your DVD player to progressive mode. If you get video, you have your culpret. I had the same problem on my Panny and that is what the problem turned out to be...

Of course, this argument presumes that settings and connections are correctly configured.

hmm, thanks for the responses. So, I tried this: changed the HDMI cable to HDMI input 2 on my tv. Turned everything on,popped in a dvd and it worked. So, just for kicks I switched the cable back to input 1 and it worked again. Watched part of a movie. Took it out, popped in another, and now there's no conversion again... Could it also have something to do with how the movie is coded? Ugh...

I did try viewing with both progressive and non-progressive. That makes me think - the on-screen menu for the Denon will not show up via HDMI, but will any other way. Shouldn't the Denon be up-converting when I make the adjustment in the menu?

most of the time OSD only comes up in composite, unless the receiver specifically states that it upconverts it to other outputs.

on denon 2807
OSD is very picky.
some OSD will come up in all modes.
some OSD (overlays) have to have specific resolutions, with specific inputs utilized and some not utilized.
my manual has a cryptic chart to try to sort it out. Try being the key word. basically the last poster is correct. add a composite output to the tv and test that. with mine if I am on a 480I signal, i will get the overlay. with a 720P, i will not get an overlay. YMMV, depending on your input/output configuration. Plus you have a different receiver.

Again, thanks for all the input. Mucho thanks. Well, on the 2307, there's no overlay for the OSD. It will go through component cable. Anyway, I kept messing with my dvd player. I put a dvd in, pressed play and nothing would show. Then I stopped it, turned off the progressive output, turned it back on, pressed play, and now it's showing through the HDMI cable. Ok, I'll take it I guess... Onto another battle. Oh, and yes, those charts in the Denon manuals are a work of wonder... I get headaches looking at them.
