My PS3 barely makes any noise, tho I've heard if you have it confined where there's too much heat it noises up trying to cool down.

Mine is almost totally quiet except if the room temperature climbs over 78 then it kicks into 2nd gear and by 80 it goes to 3rd, so it's not a problem as long as the room is kept cool.

Reading things like that make me really think I'm clogged with kitty fur, or have another issue. Our room is RARELY above 72 degrees...even in the summer.

I wonder if you have different version of the console, or perhaps one of you has your console in a mor enclosed area?

If that's the case, a few shots of compressed air should make it work. I had that with 2 computers (laptop and a desktop) and it worked wonder after their fans kept kicking in and did not even seem to cool down the computers.

My unit has always done this, probably one of the first units.
I've had it in open and well ventilated Synergy cabinet. Doesn't make a difference.
The only thing that makes the PS3 hot is the PS3. The fan kicks in after playing a DVD for 10 minutes.

A lot of these players have their fan start early (all of the Toshiba HD-DVD), but you only hear it if nothing is playing (very quiet).
I'm glad my new BD-30 is totally silent.

It does seem to have different levels...the fan on low doesn't bother me. It's only when it cranks up to hurricane levels that it gets really annoying.

I suspect Ray can't tell the difference between his "can" and his "fan." That's what happens when one gets really old. In fact, my wife tells me that my can is pretty loud on an intermittent basis.
