I have the 40 GB unit in a component rack with an open back and sealed glass door in front. If I watch a Blu-ray movie with the glass door closed the unit gets quite loud (hot). If I open the glass door a few inches the fans never kick in and it keeps quite cool.
I think the PS3 design pulls air through the front and exhausts it out the back so an open back is not really useful if it can't get fresh air from the front.

That's the situation I'm in. I use the Blu-ray case to prop open the door whenever I'm watching a movie.

I bet my xbox 360 is louder ! God, I hope not. You've obviously never used a 360. Unless your PS3 has something abnormally wrong with it, my 360 is miles louder then the PS3. Even when the PS3's fans start going after a few hours, they're just a slight hum in the background, the 360 is like "whirr" from about 7 feet away, it's not noticeable if you're gaming, but if you're watching a movie with lots of dialog and thus not tons of noise, you will notice it. Dust it, wipe it down, treat the PS3 nice. If it's still really really loud, p erhaps send it in to sony? - D

The 360 is way to loud! I'v had 3 of them and they all sounded like a jet airplane or vacume cleaner! Its not the cooling fan but the DVD drive is super fast and makes way to much noise.
Again i cannot praise my PS3 for how silent it is! If the green power light was not turned on i would never know it was on!

You ain't never lied! I do have the Katz additional power cooler, and a laptop cooler. It gets way too hot. So have the two cooling addon's to prevent the ring of fire!

I thought the ring of fire is what you get about 8 to 10 hours after eating jalapeño nachos and suicide wings.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.
