Must be nice... public insurance on bikes here in about 2002 or 2003 suddenly doubled.
Really makes you wonder how much you want to ride when it's going to cost you $2379 to insure a bike (using a 2001 Honda Shadow ACE 750 as a model)... and the riding season here is 5 months.
Bren R. Wow. That's a lot! I ride a 2005 Suzuki Boulevard M50. Mid-sized, 805cc, sporty-ish looking cruiser. Really great bike. Fuel injected, shaft drive, water cooled. No fussing with chokes, carbs, or oiling chains. I pay $135 per year to insure it. Full year, comprehensive policy, good limits, and a $250 deductable. $2,400/year for a 7 year old Honda Ace 750? That's absolutely absurd because $2,400 sounds like a pretty reasonable price to BUY a bike like that! And yeah, I figured you were talking to me. One tiny benefit to living in the middle of hard-core corn country. We have a few E85 pumps in my town of 24k souls. One even has a BioDiesel pump.

RickF,
Is that a Corolla? What MPG do you get?
$3.58 unleaded here today. Doug, yes it is ... a CE Model with power windows, door locks, AM/FM CD and automatic. My drive is 207 miles each day to and from work, I am getting 37-39 on the highway and 35.5-37 around town. It was the last new '08 (17 miles on the odometer) the dealer had on the lot and I got it out the door for $15,308. I bought it April 10th and have put over 11k miles on it and thus far I am extremely happy with the car ... especially whenever I pull into the gas station! I've somewhat had to change my driving habits because she's certainly not an offensive driving machine like my truck, that's for sure.

3.6 hours in the car for the round trip drive ... but most often we're only working 4-6 hours a day so it really doesn't make for *too* many long days.

Dang, Rick, that's a lot of time spent in the car. I think gas mileage and a comfortable seat would be my top two selling points if I were you!

I pay $135 per year to insure it. Full year, comprehensive policy, good limits, and a $250 deductable. That's $200 deductable, $200 comprehensive, $1M liability and all-purpose (so you can ride to work)... $200 a month year round... or $480 a month over the 5 months of the year you can ride here. They just don't want anyone riding here is all. I'd personally like to see bikes split into 4 catagories instead of two. Right now it's 499 and less CCs and 500+ CCs... I'd like them to split them by bike type too... cruiser versus rice rocket. Let each type of rider only affect their own premiums. Bren R.

I just filled up the tank at $3.30 / gallon. I average about 35 MPG in my little Hynundai Accent.

Take the insurance down on bikes that rarely get into as many or as large an accident, like the guy with the 30k Harley. Ya, like that rich young teenager is gunning it at 200kph through red lights. I would love to get back into riding, but it just isn't worth the cost. I love our Corolla. Great car. Peppy, good on gas, comfortable.
