Hello Everyone,

My parents are building a new house and I have sold my father on an M80 system after a listening session. The M80 and Center channel location will be in the corner. The only question we have is the QS8 location.

I want to make sure he has the full 5.1 experience. I told him the normal specs of 5.1 speaker locations but there was still some concern on putting the speaker above the kitchen island (aestetics).

I attached a image of the floor plan where I sketched in the speakers, the sectional, and his chair in the middle (primary listening location). My idea was to put the right channel QS8 on the wall above the back of the sectional (in the jpeg). The left channel is the question. If you look at the red arrow pointing the other side of the room there is a piece of wall that it could be mounted on. Not sure if that's to much of a disconnect.

Any suggestions, comments, etc are welcome. They will be wiring it up in the next week or so.

Thanks in advance.

Just a quick thought, but you could always mount the QS8 speakers from the ceiling and be able to put them exactly where you want. Sirquack did this and has some pictures on his web site I believe. Check out his profile on here (he posts quite a bit so you should be able to find him pretty easily)...

Ceiling mounts are definetly an option. However the location I thought would be great the speaker back would be hovering over the island in the kitchen. I know Sirquack, he got me into Axioms. I'll have to poke around his site today.

I have a similar seating situation and I have found that going to a 6.1 system really helped with the overall envelopment. You might still want to ceiling mount the QS's, I have mine wall mounted. The rear center channel would be where the red arrow is and you would place the L side surround above or near the 1/2 wall, opposite the R. Surround you have above the sectional.

Hi jbsengineer,

Good suggestions from all, and I concur with Jakewash's suggestion to mount the left side surround on the half-wall. You could move the right side surround forward a bit over the sectional and add a one or two back surrounds (for 6.1 or 7.1, respectively) to achieve really excellent envelopment.

Alan,

You dont see a problem with the QS8 being to low on the half wall? Thanks

Edit: The half wall will have a small counter along it on top

Jakewalsh,

Thanks for the suggestion. I think if anything I'll recommend to have the rear wired for a 7.1 for the future. Not sure where I would put that last surround though going by your suggestion.

I do not believe Alan actuall meant 'on' the half wall. I am picturing that wall only about 4ft high, although if you could have the wall built out about a foot and then drop to half, that would give you room to mount the speaker and not break the open floor plan.

For 7.1 I would move the 'arrowed rear channel closer to the secctional and then the other one equal distance from that corner toward the L surround position, probably pretty close to where the corner of the island is, although I am sure 6.1 would be more than enough with 3 QS8's.

6.1 makes sense for the room it seems. How do most receivers handle the center rear surround with a 5.1 stream?

So we are looking at something along these lines with the Left QS8 being maybe ceiling mounted about the 1/2 wall:
