JP and I seriously enjoyed Jenny Lewis last night. The venue was a historic synagogue in downtown DC. The downstairs was already pretty full when we got there, but the balcony section offered us a fantastic view of the stage.

There were two opening bands. The first was Michael Runion, who did not impress me much, but that was likely due to the poor sound quality and the fact that they suffer from over-drum-itis.

The second opener actually used a few members from Jenny's band. The singer was this great big bear-ish guy with long strawberry-blondish, hippie-like hair and a full beard. He was pretty drunk, and drinking, through his entire set, but I quite enjoyed it. Benji Hughes was his name. During their first song, I told JP that they sounded like Pink Floyd crossed with Leonard Cohen. The guitar player was top notch.

Then came Jenny. I knew she was going to be great, but the show surpassed my expectations. She and her band walked in from the rear of the venue singing an a capella chant and the rest of the set was a mixture of genres, from rock-your-face-off tunes to beautiful acoustic duets. If you have a chance to catch this tour, don't miss it!

Now, I must buy her new CD, Acid Tongue.

Sounds like a show I would have enjoyed. I mean, if I didn't go with you and JP.
