They started off with some technical issues that you don't expect from a band that's of "legendary" caliber. His mic wasn't up for two songs and he and his other guitarist weren't "together" on anything. The mix was horrible (loud and muddy) and even when he got his mic level turned up, he wasn't singing as much as "talking" the lyrics as a shout.
People were leaving all around us, and we decided to keep giving him one more song, and then another song.... but when he started the fifth song an it was just as bad, we left too.
It was pitiful in my opinion. I know he broke his hip a few years ago, but the band played a full song without him to start (yes, still muddy...his guitarist was doing a solo through the whole thing and you couldn't hear him in the mix) and then Johnny slowly walked out on the stage, looking horrible, and someone put a mic in front of his chair...which fell off the mic stand half way through that first song and laid there for a minute and a half till some girl ran up on the stage and propped it on the stand in front of him again.
Maybe it was this single show, but choosing to go to McDonald's over seeing him in a little theater, all paid for, while I was already comfortable in my seat is pretty telling.
I was a fan, too.... but if this is what his show is like now.... well, I've honestly seen high school bands that were better...... Really.

I really should emphasize, though, that Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters' set was the best display of blues guitar I've seen since KWS 6 or 7 years ago, and SRV before that. Really, really good, and I've added a bunch of discs to my Amazon basket. He's flown under my radar for too long. I was wishing you and RickF would have been there to see that set....

Paul McCartney will be in Kansas City next month, same town I live in, but the tickets will go on sale tomorrow and there's no way I'm going to get one right now. So, oh well.

Saw McCartney some 20 yrs ago. I thought at THAT time he was well past his prime.

There's a lot of performers out there, well past their prime. But, some are good for what they can still do at that age. Youthful vigor? No. But still able to please an audience. Yes.

Thanks for the heads up regarding Ronnie Earl Mark, I've heard of him but have never listened to him. Too bad about the Johnny Winter experience, although I do like a little of his stuff I've never been much of a fan.

Bought my ticket to go see Neil Young solo at the Jube this afternoon. Should be an interesting event. I saw him in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. Dynamite show! Crappy seats though, due to being by the doors and rude audience going in and out. And talking during opening act, which was one of my very favorite guitarists, Bert Jansch. I went as much to see Bert as Neil and I was p_ssed at those noisy people. Neil was great! amazing solo, but not all acoustic! have fun! also, last week I saw Carole King and James Taylor. Amazing, too! Next thing I see will probably be local talent. And then in Sept, I hope to see Tom Petty.

Went to see Boz Scaggs at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, B.C. last Friday. It was a great show and worth it just to hear Harbour Lights
