I've tried Audessey many times and always thought it made things sound worse. One of the basic problems with receiver based Audessey systems is the lack of processing power necessary to run all the complex iterations. Essentially, receiver based Audessey programs takes a finite sample size and then plot results based on canned fuzzy logic algorythms. Those preset algorythyms usually come with the famous Audessey rolloff in the high frequencies. Something which I suppose may be beneficial in a lively reverberant room but which may screw up the speakers FR and introduce coherency problems and ringing. I can see there may be some benefit with non-linear speakers but not great speakers like Axioms.
Having said that I think the latest Audessey programs using notebooks to run the program look more promising. They take a much larger sampling size and can run the necessary complex iterations for much longer. I'm still not convinced that they can cure time domain problems. Indeed the real issue with electronic equalization is not so much in the frequency domain as in the phase shift artifacts they introduce to the signal.
A friend of mine in another audio manufactuer calls them speaker correction systems which have been effectively marketed as silver bullets. I've always gotten better results by leaving Audessey off and playing with room treatments, seating and speaker positions.
As always YMMV and if it works go for it. Or as Alan usually zings when we can't resolve a difference of opinion, " If that's the reality you want to believe, that's OK too."

I haven't liked the Audyssey corrections, but I keep it "on" with essentially a bypassed EQ because I love the Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume features.

IN MY ROOM, Audyssey made a positive difference. I don't have a lot of flexibility relative to speaker placement or listening position. Likewise, it is a ginormous room open to basically the whole house, so room treatments are pretty much a non-starter. I absolutely agree with John that these non-signal-path methods are better initial approaches.
I thought Adrian's system sounded really wonderful. His room is very different than mine, but apparently, we both benefited from Audyssey.
Worked for me. YMMV.

Regarding the videos, while I did enjoy the Soundstage versions, I am eager to see the Axiom forum member interviews even more. Although I wish I had been smarter in mine, there was a particularly tender moment with Murph that I am looking forward to.

Crap, they're gonna publicly post those??? I never would have agreed to do it. Those of you w/ small children or pets, please be sure that they are out in the yard (or, better, a neighbor's yard) if you run it. Even w/ my voice-made-for-emails turned off, someone could be severely traumatized----like 'need JP' traumatized!
I have destroyed many a CRT in my day---thankfully in very small markets. Imagine ME being the public face AND voice of city cultural institutions?? I barf when I watched 'em. At least I had days to prep in every one of those instances. The voice and the face didn't change (I did sport dapper attire, though), but at lest I knew exactly WTF I was rambling on about.
My sincere apologies. Can I still use the word "sincere" here w/o you hideously snickering?

Oh, I don't KNOW that they're going public, Bob. My understanding from conversing with the videographer is that the content really was at Ian's request. I'm working WITH the meds, and have pretty much achieved post-Bob balance, now. ::hideously snickers::

I showed my kids. "Look, Daddy's on Youtube!" "Dad, you put me on Youtube when I was a little kid." "Oh, yeah." Kids these days have no idea how magical this all is.
