How does the state pay for anything?

Tom, a business is legally required to collect sales tax if it has a "physical presence" in the state of the purchaser's residence. Since Amazon is headquartered in Seattle, this hits you. So, taking into account shipping charges, if any, of course, it pays to buy direct from an out-of-state business, using a deal such as the 6thAve one which David links.

I've ordered from Amz through my aunt in Wash state and as far as I understand it, some items are taxed and some aren't, depending on where the items originate. Directly from Amazon.com gets taxed. Third party sellers, no tax. Despite having to pay sales tax, I still do most of my online shopping from Amazon.com. The Amazon.com Prime shipping definitely pays for itself over the course of a year. The best way to buy things is from third party sellers who have their orders fulfilled by Amazon.com. No tax, Amazon.com Prime shipping. Nice.

I was able to get amazon prime for a year by entering my .edu school email adress. I like the free 2 day shipping and the $3.99 overnight shipping is handy too!

Charles, except(at least in legal theory)if the third party seller is also located in the state of the purchaser. I've noticed in some of my buys of CDs from sellers on Amazon that they don't necessarily comply with the sales tax requirement.

Yeah, even when I've bought from third party sellers based in WA, I haven't paid sales tax.

Yes, the property taxes are higher than usual, though NH is still consistently rated among the lowest for overall tax burden.
