i just read here: http://www.axiomaudio.com/research_PowerTestRoom.htmlthat the M80s have been tested for 100 hours with heavy metal music, at 700 Watts continuous input power, with peaks of 1000 Watts! this is very impressive, but it brings a question: if this speaker is good for 700 Watts cont. input power, why then do you rate the speakers at 400 Watts, and not at 700 Watts ?

So people don't lose their hearing?
Half of communication is listening. You can't listen with your mouth.

Better to under promise and over deliver?

That is a solid business strategy.
In my line of work, I sometimes see companies with new medications do the opposite. To get my attention, the drug rep will make some very impressive claims. Guess what happens then? If/when I find out that the medication is not doing what it was supposed to do, then my impression of it (and the drug rep) goes in the toilet. Example: Strattera was supposed to be just as good as the stimulants (Ritalin, Adderall, etc) for ADHD. It wasn't. It's pretty weak. Can I really trust the Eli Lilly rep any more?
The savvy companies try the under-promise and over-deliver strategy.

Isn't that ultimately determined by what they bring you for lunch? My *guess* with the OPs question is that just because they test it out at that high a power, that doesn't mean they recommend that power for all-day, everyday use. A Hyundai might be tested at 110MPH, but that doesn't mean it's really recommended.
