Maybe you are older than you think ... I believe that would have been 49 years old and not 39 years old.

You're right 49 years.

(Hard to count past 21).

Not sure what they'd charge, but a duct cleaning service with the big truck and 12" hose would probably make very short work of that insulation.

My guess is nobody would touch it on fears of Asbestos contamination. Most of that insulation is Rock Wool that contains only trace amounts of Asbestos. Not sure what the light (yellowish) colored stuff is. I did compare to pictures of asbestos insulation and this is not it.

But still. I might call around anyway. It'd be my luck that they would be the ones stepping through the ceiling.

Wow. Around here, just a threat of even small amounts of asbestos = hazmat suits, bubbled in work areas with negative airflow exhausting through special filters, air locked change areas with portable showers, etc.....

You are a brave man.

By trace amounts, I'm talking not measurable. At least, according to what articles I've read. Rock Wool's amount of asbestos is undeterminable (replace with your favorite word here instead).

Asbestos removal from our basement a couple of years ago:

Brian, if there's a possibility of asbestos in what you're dumping, prepare for a multi-tens-of-thousands fine if you get caught.

If you have ANY thoughts of the possibility of asbestos, you should have had samples tested.

And NOT wearing serious protection if you're suspecting Asbestos in loose fill is just asking for a shortened lifespan.

Mark just wants everyone to adopt his taste in headgear.

Seriously, Brian, I was about to post basically the same thing. Check your state and local laws. A trash collector could find it and report you to the EPA. The clean-up costs and fines are both gigantic!
