Actually this is a question about What Video Game Should I Be Playing?
I will likely have the next two weeks off from work so it would be the perfect time to play something new, though I might replay something if I can’t find anything of interest.
Here are the recent games I’ve liked a lot (enough to play more than once) :
Skyrim- vast, non-linear, multi-faceted, graphics, immersive
Mass Effect – storyline, character interaction, graphics, immersive
Dragon Quest – characters, party system
Things I like the most are: Immersiveness Escapism like SciFi/Fantasy/non-contemporary Non-linear gameplay Interesting NPC interaction Variety of character choices
Things I don’t like: The opposite of what’s above (though I can forgive some faults for excellence otherwise) Twitch fests (can’t stand button mashing) Complex controls without onscreen menus (I hate having to reference instructions during gameplay)
Any recommendations are welcome even older games. I'm really, REALLY enjoying Borderlands 2 right now. It also fits the majority of the criteria you are seeking (exception of a really good story). Excellent game.
I’m armed and I’m drinking. You don’t want to listen to advice from me, amigo.

Hmmm. I've been playing Yahtzee on my iPad. Does that count?

Dean, have you looked at Dishonored? It just came out, but looks to hit upon all your points.

Thanks for the link Sean. I was going to check on it since I’ve been watching Zero Punctuation reviews this afternoon and been getting beaten over the head with an add for it every time I start a video.

Ha ha, just finishing what Zero Punctuation started.
I had seen ads for the game before, but never paid it much attention. I think a commercial came on TV for it the other day and it piqued my interest.

I'll probably end up with both Borderlands 2 and Dishonored, but not until well into the future, after all this basement craziness dies down. By then they'll have Game of the Year editions for cheap, I bet.

Guild Wars 2 is proving to be fun,. Essentially, it's Skyrim with other people playing around you. The world map is theoretically open but realistically, you best not wander into the 'higher level than you' areas too much, unless you do not mind dying. Of course, there is nothing stopping you from wandering around a higher level area of the map to explore. It's dangerous but I like to do that with my Ranger character. It just feels like something he should do. Poor Scritchy, my pet bear. He loyally follows me to his doom way too often.
One should also note that although it's an MMO, there is no monthly fee and it's not like an 'optionally free to play' MMO. You are not penalized or restricted unless you spend real world money by buying items or a "gold subscription". It was designed to run wide open without a monthly fee.
The dynamic world events are cool too as they make the world seem more alive. Last night, the farmland area I was in was suddenly invaded by an army of centaurs. This isn't a normal event on the map but one of the dynamically generated world events that keep things interesting. It was fun to see players band together to drive them off.
I don't PvP much because it tends to get more 'twitchy' in that environment and I'm just not good at that. I did try the world vs world PVP where players don't just run around blatantly killing each other but have to band together into small armies and work tactically to storm or defend keeps & use siege weapons. This was actually pretty fun. I still died a lot but I could see it becoming a fun diversion from the norm.
It pales in ultimate totality to Skyrim, but I actually enjoy the cooperative side of jumping into a fray with another players from all around the world. Being surrounded by human players instead of just AI just makes the world seem all the more real.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

I played WoW for almost 5 years. I stopped about 1.5 years ago. Man did I get sucked into that game.

After some research I picked up both Dishonored and Borderlands 2 so thanks for the suggestions guys. I got Dishonored because I usually gravitate to sneaking play style. Also everyone is saying how immersive it is including the audio cues so it just seemed like a must buy. However, it’s also a very short game at least for now pending the release of DLC so Borderland 2 became the next choice. What sold it for me besides the length of the game were the comments on how good and even funny the writing can be and that it also has very good voice acting. So even though neither game will probably hit all the marks between the two of them I think it will all balance out. I in processed today and submitted for all my leave so my next day of work wont be until the 29th. Unless I’m selected for a trip on the 26th which isn’t nearly as bad as actually being at the place I work. Thanks for the recommendation of Guild Wars 2 Murph. I’m tempted to consider it but I know my personality and if I like it I’m sure it will lead to an MMO addiction which would make crack and meth pale in comparison.
