Yeah, imagine the problem I had picking this out of jack's mind and putting it into a graphic. Andy, an ill-fated attempt to help the new guy.

Okay everybody. I'm going to play Devil's Advocate on this break in thing. I bought the VP150. Then a couple months later I got the M2s. A month later now I have the M60s and the QS8s. What do they all have in common you wonder? Each time (out of the box) they had a different sound (especially from the tweeters) than they did even after a couple hours of play. Now. These are all Axioms. All the same components. Just "new" at different times. When I got my 60s and out of the box they sounded a little...I can't even explain it...crunchy...that's not really the best word, but it's all I could come up with. I can't really explain it. It's not an overly bright..because that can be confused with "excessive detail". But they didn't sound as good as my M2s (which now had a good 60 hours on them) or my even better sounding VP150 (which has well over 100 hours on them). Everytime...out of the box...I noticed it. Then, even after a couple hours, they mellowed out.
I suppose you'd be curious to hear the content I used. LOTR: Fellowship, Pirates of the Carribean (movie and soundtrack), Norah Jones SACD, Titanic SACD, and the XBOX game Halo.
Now I used to be of a mindset that it was my ear/mind adjusting to the sound...but when I'm on my third round of doing this new "break-in" thing...my ears have to believe there's something to it...IMHO.
P.S. - I am not a scientist. I have no scientific evidence to back up my "theory". Just going with what I thought I heard.
But...I'll throw this in there. My WIFE even commented on how they sounded different even after a couple hours. She said they sounded "tight". That was her term. I don't really talk to her much about speakers or use jargon with her. So...there...my work is done on going against the grain.

Misfit, the one major difference here is that even though the speakers have the same components, they are STILL different speakers.
The tower/box sizes alone will introduce slightly different frequency responses and hence why the graphs of the M80 look quite different from the M22.
Second to that, your brain is already biased towards expecting to potentially hear a different sound b/c you have the thought about break-in already in the fore front. This is why blind testing is used to eliminate such variables. It is something that we cannot conciously remove no matter how many times an 'audiophile' may say/believe they have the power to do such a thing.
Take a look at this old post by Alan.

I guess my stance would be perhaps a balance. I think in any case there is going to be some "getting used to" whatever it is that you have that is new to you. BUT...I didn't go into opening up the M60s thinking of...well...I'll need to break these in. I just plugged them in and was taken a little back. Mostly, emphasis on mostly, by the high end. The tweeters. Which should sound somewhat similar between the M2s and M60s. But still, you are right. They are not the same speaker. And overall as a speaker the M60s have much greater depth of sound as it covers a larger Hertz spectrum. Again. Going off of what I thought I heard...twice. Once with the M2s and once with the M60s. I first applied the...my ears are breaking idea when I first got my M2s. It wasn't until I got my M60s that I said to myself. I shouldn't have to be breaking myself into this sound anymore? I should've adapted by now with the VP150 and the M2s. See where I'm coming from?
I guess I'm just stating what I think. Nothing more. It really doesn't matter which way it goes really..as long as in the end we're all happy with what we have. And I'm very happy

bigjohn,
Your open-mindedness is very refreshing. Yes, you're opinionated, but at least you acknowledge that your's isn't the only way. That's rare

Were you hearing the speakers in different rooms, as well? Room interaction upstairs made some M3s very bright, but they sounded mighty nice downstairs.
