So I go downstairs to the offcuts pile and pick up the first piece of plywood I see: 12 gauge rifled slug. You get better results if you use a backer board. The front of the hole is much cleaner.

Had you tightly clamped on a (sacrificial) backerboard, you could have avoided that nasty tear-out.
Always call the place you live a house. When you're old, everyone else will call it a home.
