Hi everyone,
Which sub would be recommended as an ideal compliment to an M60/QS4/ VP 160 system?

That's a pretty large sub. It wouldn't be overwhelming?

It won't be overwhelming. Keep in mind that deep bass requires a lot of excursion. As you go down an octave, for a specific output in SPL, it requires FOUR times the excursion to achieve that level of SPL.
Example: If at 80 Hz, a driver has to move 1/16 of an inch to achieve 100 dB, it needs to move 1/4 of an inch at 40 Hz and 1 inch at 20 Hz.
I have personally used an EP800 with a pair of M3's .... and astonished listeners when the system was revealed.
That being said, if budget is a concern, look at the EP350. Wonderful subwoofer as well, but you will miss the 16-20 Hz stuff.

Craig nailed the key details, but also keep this in mind... You don't want to "crank" your sub anyway. You want overhead so that you aren't near the limits all of the time.
Too many times people will buy a sub that honestly is too small, then they don't get the punch or the deep bass that they expect, and they end up with distortion as they try to crank it up.

Good to know. That all makes a lot of sense. Thanks, everyone.
My only issue is that the 500 is 21.5 inches tall, and I've only got about 17.5 inches beneath my screen. Would it create operational issues or problems if I placed the sub on its side?

Hi mdavis
you can put the sub pretty much anywhere in the room you want. Low frequencies are not directional.
You may want to google "sub crawl" for articles on finding the best positions for your sub in your room.
I have an EP500 and think it is a great sub. I have plenty others to compare it to.
G'luck

It is no problem to put your sub on its side. If you let us know we can make it with the feet on the side for you.

Until I purchased the Axiom EP500 untis, I have only owned too cheep, undersized and over taxed subs. I was also rather disappointed by them. They were too boomy, and as much as subs are not supposed to be directional, these always seem to be.
The EP500 can produce some serious sub sonic sound. There are times when I think its not doing anything until you turn them off. There are times when they scare the crap out of me as the movie hits a sonic frequency that is suddenly starts to shake.
