I ditched Norton a long, long time ago for that same reason.

Our school district and city departments ditched Symantec a few years ago after having a cybersecurity company audit our environment. We are now using Sentinel .

I'm very careful what I load on my computers and I keep devices/computers (especially ones that might be vulnerable) on a separate VLans to keep a breached computer from infecting other computers. I'm probably more paranoid then you.
So, my computers, wife's computer, the kids computers, game computers, guests, audio/video, house, switches/routers, and Internet of things each have separate VLans. Each VLan has access to only what it needs (server, printer, internet, ...). Some like switch and router access need a hardwire connection.

Avast, seems effective, light footprint, unlike Norton (haven't used it for years, maybe it's better now, dunno).
