Looked at a few scenes from LOTR just to test the sub sounds in the first movie. Forgot how old the standard DVD format of 480 resolution is on large tvs. Has anyone got the Bluray versions to be able to comment on their quality? I have seen some other older movie upgrades to Bluray that really weren't much better.

Yep. We went from dvd to bluray to 4K HDR edition.
I highly suggest picking up 4K blurays of your favourite titles and new releases. Difference is huge on the leap from DVD.
The panasonic UB820 is a fantastic player for many reasons. Biggest plus is breathing new life into your existing bluray library with its tone mapping. Highly recommended if you have a large collection of physical media. HIGHLY recommended.
If you are still spinning dvds its time to reward your oled with updated formats. Lots of new releases on Netflix are in 4K and ATMOS as well. Cheap way to get in!

I agree. I've been updating my must have DVDs & blu-rays when I see a good deal on them in 4K ATMOS. I always read the reviews as apparently some titles are poorly done. Also it's my understanding that lot of streaming services don't stream 4k or don't stream in full 4k. That currently a 4k disk is the best source.
That said, most of the time It's not an issue as my screen is not that large that 4k looks that much better and it's up sampling is pretty good. Another reason to upgrade is that none of my DVDs or blu-rays are in ATMOS or any other 3d format ... many are only 5.1

It's not expanding at the rate it used to, but it's still growing. Getting UHD Blu-ray wherever possible. Just trying to be more selective than I have in the past. I don't want to see physical formats die, even if it seems inevitable.

I love buying disks. Harder and harder to find titles in local stores. Luckily online shopping still A-Ok.

Agree with Trevor. I bought the UB820 when it was initially released. It's been working without issue.
Panasonic also has a more 'professional' model out (UB9000) that's essentially the same player, but aluminum case that I wanted to get, but couldn't find one at a reasonable price point.
I bought the LOTR extended version in 4K a couple months ago. Waiting for a day I don't need to do anything to binge-watch it. These movies are one of the few that I actually prefer watching the extended versions.

Is it really better resolution-wise than the originals? Some remixes are not and the upsampling IMO is rather so so.

Do you like the Sony? I’ve been debating between that and the Panasonic 820. The 820 seems like it has more features.

I haven't used it much for Bluray. We don't have any 4k Bluray because we only just got the 4k tvs within the past year+. The kids have some bluray discs though so i needed that for a player, plus the DVD-a. I don't have many of those but the ones i do have sound stellar and i use them for sound testing.
