Ya I'm not using the *power* button... I wonder if I'm getting numerous power surges during the day...

Oh this is humiliating...
I forgot that the 630 lets you have different channel settings for different inputs. When set to DVD the FL channel was set to 0dB, but when set to CD the FL channel was +10dB. I read your post again earlier this evening and suddenly I understood what you meant.
Now I just have to figure out why the other surround modes didn't sound so bad

That's what I was getting at, yeah... always look for the most obvious solution.
Similar thing happened to me today - realized the "unflat" response of the M3s sounded really bad listening to a CD today while cleaning my turtle tank. Thought hell, maybe the cold I had really cleaned out my ears and I'm finally hearing what everyone complains about based on the NRC anechoic chamber graphs.
Nope... fiancee must have grabbed the wrong remote and tried to use menu right on the receiver to fast forward the VCR and bumped the bass up to +6.
