hmmm, i hope for my sake you are wrong john. I was really banking on it being active bi-amping using the surround channels. interesting (not stupid) idea even if it isnt the case.
i think in surround mode it reverts to a bi-wire mode, as im still getting bass from my bass drivers.
its sad the manual is so vague,

There's no way it works like that (switching between bi-amp and bi-wire). It's just not feasible electrically speaking. Sorry, man. However, here's a couple of articles on bi-amping and bi-wiring to look at: bi-wiringbi-amping

why is there no reason it works like that? if it doesnt then i agree it is extreme manufactuing stupidity!
surely its would just need to do what you do with twisted wires with relays inside?
biwire > one amp connected to both A and B outputs? biamp > one amp to A (hi frequencies), one amp to b (low frequencies) this is exactly what they are claiming.
im sorry i just dont see the electrical limitations here, im not being confrontational, maybe naive? i recognise you guys are significantly more versed in this field than me.
my assumption (could be flawed) is that individual amps can be internally routed dynamically depending on the situation. why is this unfeasible?
thanks again for indulging me, i genuinely appreciate it. _sam

Usually amps are directly connected to the outputs. I assume that this was a relatively inexpensive receiver, so I am making the further assumption there is no way they would put a feature on it that is not available on much more expensive receivers.
So, lots of assumptions happening here, but the short of it is, even if it did work as you think, it wouldn't matter anyway. There are no performance benefits from bi-amping with identical amps and without an external crossover. Likewise, there are no benefits from bi=wiring, unless you're the one selling the wire.

Sam, there aren't any "individual amps" in a receiver. There're just several sets of output transistors(operating as valves)drawing on one power supply section. This can't increase the power available.

oh, ouch, in that case i am sadly the victim of ambiguously optimistic marketing. i regularly drool over this: http://www.plinius.com/documents/downloads/plinius_odeonbrochure.pdfand just assumed all multi channel amps are made the same. well i think tomorrow im going to take a screwdriver to this piece of <censored>.... um entirely adequate consumer hardware. thanks for your help. and happy new year. _sam

Sorry to disappoint, Sam.
Happy new year to you, and don't hurt yourself while you are dealing with your entirely adequate consumer hardware. (been there, man...)

the rb1092 arrived, they either lace their packaging with some kind of twisted aphrodisiac, or it really is exactly what i was looking for.
ive been running my squeezebox 2 channels directly into it and dont expect to get out of my listening chair long enough to hook up my 5.1 for many days.
absolutely fantastic. thanks for all your help _sam
